The Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI) will engage in three distinct categories of research in Kuwait, and across the Gulf region. These areas include clinical research, health services research, and population-based research. The outcomes of these research agenda will be disseminated locally; however, the primary knowledge translation strategy will be through publication in high impact peer review journals.

Clinical Research

Clinical Research is defined as research with the goal of improving the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury thereby ameliorating health and quality of life of individuals through life’s trajectory from pediatrics to geriatrics. For instance, some of the initial research projects at the FSRI might include research comparing treatment approaches for clients with specific clinical diagnosis such as lateral ankle sprain; or even evaluating the outcomes of new immerging treatment approaches to neurological conditions such as stroke. The overarching philosophy of the FSRI is to improve rehabilitation outcomes in Kuwait, and the clinical research through the FSRI will contribute to the knowledge and understanding in this area.

Health Services Research

Improving efficiency and effectiveness of health professionals, and the overall health system, through changes to practice and policy underpin the rationale of health services research (HSR). In general, HSR is a multidiciplinary field of investigation that studies how social factors and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affects access, cost and quality. The World Health Organization estimates rehabilitation services reach only a small segment of the global population who stand to benefit from such service, therefore the FSRI will be conducting research to estimate the proportion of the population who access service, and the identification of barriers to improved access. Overall, the FSRI will be undertaking research that will explore the changing structure of rehabilitation services in Kuwait as well as throughout the Gulf region.

Population-Based Research

Social, cultural, environmental and population research is critical in order to more fully understand the health of the population in Kuwait, or a sub-population therein. The goal of the population-based research agenda at the FSRI is an improved understanding of the ways in which social, cultural, environmental, occupational, and economic factors determine and impact health status in Kuwait and throughout the region. Currently, Kuwait is a signatory to the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD), a global initiative to more thoroughly understand the impact of musculoskeletal disorder such as arthritis among the population. However, now more than five years into the BJD, Kuwait has not begun the process of data collection or analysis of the impact of MSK disorder. As such, the FSRI has made it a priority to gather a team of local and international research to begin the process collection, analysis population data in order to implement change in how to better address MSK conditions.
