Patients entering a rehabilitation program for the first time have a lot of questions. The following are a few that are more commonly asked.
What is rehabilitation?
Who should consider physical rehabilitation?
What can I expect at FSRI?
What should I bring?
How often do I have to come to FSRI?
How do I pay?

What is rehabilitation?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also called physiatry, is the branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders –particularly those of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems – that may produce temporary or permanent impairment. The word "rehabilitation" is derived from the Latin words habilitare, to enable, and re, to do again. Rehabilitation thus means to enable again, to restore a person’s abilities as fully as possible. Rehabilitation seeks to heal in all aspects of life, bringing professionals from many disciplines together to create an integrated approach to wellbeing.

Who should consider physical rehabilitation?
People who have been told by their doctor that they need a physiotherapist’s services should consider coming to FSRI. Senior citizens who experience reduced mobility should consider coming to FSRI. People with sports-injuries or accident-related injuries should consider coming to FSRI. People who have had surgery and want to recover their pre-surgery activity level should consider coming to FSRI. And finally, anyone who wants to be more generally fit should consider coming to FSRI.

What can I expect at FSRI?
A typical experience at FSRI would involve you seeing either a physical therapist or an orthopaedic surgeon for an extensive and thorough evaluation. You will be encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback on your problem.

Once the evaluation has been performed, an assessment and diagnosis of the cause of your problem will be explained to you in detail. Questions will be addressed and, if appropriate, a specific treatment program developed to meet your needs will be created. If your condition requires additional testing or further evaluative procedures, FSRI will facilitate that process.

You will then participate in the prescribed therapies, like hydrotherapy or kinesiology, under the supervision of our fully qualified medical staff. You might also attend a group workshop; say on yoga or Pilates, to maximize your fitness levels.

What should I bring?
If you have taken X-rays of any kind, you should bring them with you. Similarly, if you have recently had surgery, you should bring a referral from your consulting doctor. Bring a T-shirt and shorts, or other loose fitting athletic clothing, and be ready to work hard.

How often do I have to come to FSRI?
A treatment program will be worked out between you and your doctor at FSRI. Together you will decide how often you need to come to FSRI to maximize your fitness goals.
