Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute Supports UN/WHO Bone and Joint Decade

The World Health Organization and the United Nations have designated 2000-2010' as the Bone and Joint Decade (BJD) to bring attention to the fact that musculoskeletal diseases are the most common cause of chronic disability in the world today. The Bone and Joint Decade, which focuses on back pain, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and musculoskeletal trauma, is intended to raise awareness of the growing burden of these diseases on society, empower patients in their own care, promote cost effective prevention and treatment, and advance research and education in the musculoskeletal field. The Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute is a proud supporter of the Bone and Joint Decade. Vice President for Clinical Operations, Dr. Elham El-Hamdan, is the National Action Network Coordinator for the Bone and Joint Decade in Kuwait, and is leading the country-wide effort to mobilize doctor and patient support for the Decade’s goals. Moreover, as Kuwait’s only rehabilitation institute specializing in education and research as well as treatment, the Fawzia Sultan Institute plays an important awareness-building and advocacy role in a context in which public health campaigns on musculoskeletal diseases has been only too notably absent. Finally, by facilitating the continued education of Kuwait’s physiotherapists, FSRI is investing in a future generation of medical professionals committed to combating the ravages of musculoskeletal diseases.
